Mirdza Mednis Daugavietis, 92, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Grand Haven, died on May 11, 2010 at 4:00PM. Preceded in death by her dear husband, Peter Daugavietis and her parents, Anna Balodis Mednis and Woldemars Mednis, she is survived by sons Ray Daugavietis and George (Nancy) Daugavietis, of Vacaville, CA; son Andrew (Pam) Daugavietis, M.D., daughter Anita Mara Daugavietis and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Zigfrids (Pauline) Zadvinskis, M.D., all of Grand Rapids; cousin Renate Zemvalde of Smiltene, Latvia; and four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, other family members and many friends. Born in Harkow, Russia on June 4, 1917, of Latvian parents who fled to Russia during WWI because of the political situation in Latvia. Mirdza Mednis married Peter Daugavietis on June 8, 1940, four weeks before the first Russian occupation of Latvia. In 1944 they and their children, along with Mirdza's mother immigrated to America from Germany, arriving in Boston Harbor by ship on June 22, 1949. They settled in Grand Haven where Mirdza worked as the head bookeeper for Grand Haven Brass Foundry, a part of JSJ Corporation. She was also a member of the company's stockholder club, enjoyed reading, travel and upon retirement, both Mirdza and her beloved husband, Peter, joined the local YMCA and were avid swimmers. They eventually moved to Grand Rapids, where they joined Our Lady of Aglona Catholic Church and became active and dedicated volunteers at Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. A 10:00AM Memorial Mass and burial will be held on June 4, 2010, for family and friends. Memorial gifts in Mirdza's memory can be made to Our Lady of Aglona Catholic Church or Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.
