Dr. Norbert Joseph Hruby, 92, father, grandfather, uncle and widower of Dolores Hruby; and friend, former President of Aquinas College (1969-1986) died at home on Tuesday, May 18 of esophageal cancer. Surviving him are his children, Michael of San Francisco, Monica of Incline Village, NV, and Patricia of Champaign, IL; her husband Morgan Powell; and grandchildren Rachel Robbins of Fort Collins, CO, and Benjamin and Mikeala Rice of Incline Village, NV. The shining moments of his distinguished career include establishing degree programs for mature women and other non traditional students at both Mundelein College in Chicago and Aquinas College in Grand Rapids; the establishment of Eastown Community Association in Grand Rapids; helping found Chicago educational television WTTW (Channel 11) in the 1950’s; and the production of his plays across the nation. He was a visionary in the field of education and had the courage and political acumen to see his plans come to fruition. He was an inspiration to his family, friends, and colleagues; and never gave up hope that the Cubs would win the World Series. A Mass of Christian Burial and Committal Service will be celebrated Friday 2:00pm at St. Jude Church. He will repose in church one hour prior to Mass. His family will receive visitors Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm at Arsulowicz Brothers, East Mortuary, 937 Michigan NE.
